Sports Story of the Week

Ocelli, the $12,000 Misfit

Ocelli almost didn’t make the Kentucky Derby at all. He gained entry only after another horse’s injury opened a slot, but his trainer was ready. While Ocelli was a "maiden", having never won a single race, he had spent months quietly collecting points and building a case for himself.

Despite drawing the dreaded Post 20 (the worst gate in the field) and facing 70-1 odds, Ocelli stepped (galloped?) onto the big stage. Experts at CBS Sports wrote that his only goal should be to "make it around safely." After all, he was a $12,000 purchase with a "weird gait" and an unproven bloodline. He didn't look, walk, or run like a traditional champion.

But when the gates opened, Ocelli didn't just survive; he competed. He ran, unafraid, unaware of his odds and finished in an improbable third place. While the world cheered for the first-place winner, Ocelli’s team celebrated their $500,000 payday and the 41x ROI on his purchase price with uncontainable joy.

As breeder Rafael Weiss noted,

"The ones who move different aren’t always broken. Sometimes they’re just built for something the rest of us can’t see yet.”

A champion isn’t only defined by who ends up with roses around their neck. The ones in first place headed to the circle.

It’s defined by who you are, what you do, and how you show up — especially when nobody expects you to.

3 Actionable Insights:

1. If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready.

This is the unglamorous part of business that separates the doers from the dreamers. Success requires building your foundation through low-visibility work so you can execute the moment an opening appears.

2. Your Competitive Advantage Might Not Fit the Mold.

The buyers didn’t pass on Ocelli because they were stupid; they passed because he didn't fit the historical pattern of a champion. Your team's true "edge" often lives in the unconventional traits, rather than the metrics everyone else is optimizing for.

3. Define Your Own Wins.

Ocelli stepped onto the biggest stage possible, finished third, and achieved a massive ROI that redefined his entire bloodline. In professional settings, prioritize your own progress and wins; a "third-place" finish on the right stage can be more transformative than a win in a minor league.

The Pep Talk:

“Do your thing before the world tells you who you’re supposed to be. The same traits they overlook today might be the reason you break through tomorrow. Stay ready, trust what makes you different, and when your moment comes, don’t just show up, succeed.”

Sports Story of the Week You miss 100% of the shots you don't take In the famous LMFAO and Lil'Jon song, "Shots" which some of you may hear in your head right now, the famous chorus says "Shots" 16x. The last time the Carolina Hurricanes has less shots on goal in a game than that song's chorus was October 23, 2014. Maybe it was because I was in the presence of Wayne Gretzky, who famously said, "You miss 100% of the shots...

Sports Story of the Week The Weekend of Comebacks Admittedly, when there is a weekend full of sports, I sometimes find myself searching for the "best" and "closest" game even when "my" teams are playing. This happened to me Saturday night. While watching my beloved Hokie Softball team, who was down by 5 runs with one inning left, I flipped over to check the status of the Hockey game (crossover seasons are hard in this...
