The Mindset Shift:

High Standards = High Engagement

Most leaders lower expectations out of fear. Fear of losing employees or fear of the uncomfortable conversations that comes with accountability. However, high standards don’t push people away. It actually pulls the right people in. When you lower the bar to please some, you signal that you will tolerate mediocrity and in turn, lose your top performers. High-performing teams are elite because they share a belief that what they’re doing matters. By maintaining excellence, you show your team that believe they are capable of greatness.

Sideline Story: The Magic of the Masters

The first weekend in April is special. The azaleas are in bloom, and the quest for the green jacket brings out every level of golf fan. The Masters is defined by its traditions, its hype, and its strict traditions and rules. But the real magic lies in the how dang hard it is. Rookies struggle at Augusta not for lack of skill, but because the course is an unforgiving beast designed for difficulty. Veterans speak of it with reverence; they know it doesn't just test your golf ability, it tests your patience, discipline, and confidence.

Every year, despite the preparation, the course remains the great equalizer where a leader can collapse and an underdog can rise. The standards for playing are unapologetically high. If you think getting a ticket to attend is hard, consider the exclusivity of the 90 golfers invited to play. Your pedigree or handicap doesn’t protect you, and your momentum doesn’t guarantee a win. We all tune in because watching someone do something hard is exciting. Everything at Augusta is exceptional, from the greens to the snacks. To be involved in the game, near perfection is the standard (just ask the cameraman who filmed the final putt!) To win, or even to be on the course, you must be the best of the best.

3 Actionable Takeaways:

1. The Standard You Set is the Culture You Get

People match their effort to what is expected of them, and performance drifts if the bar is unclear. Stay clear, stay consistent and set the standard that creates the culture you want.

2. Not Everyone Will Fit and That’s the Point

Strong culture is built by attracting the right people and allowing those who won't uphold standards to opt out. You don't want your workplace to be for everyone. Start-Ups will burn and churn. Some institutions move slow and steady. Understand what works for you and hold it.

3. Challenge Creates Connection

Shared struggle and pursuing stretch goals unite people and build mutual respect faster than shared comfort. Work to purposefully build in some shared challenges, hard projects, and uphill climbs. You will all be better, and closer, for it!

Sports Story of the Week You miss 100% of the shots you don't take In the famous LMFAO and Lil'Jon song, "Shots" which some of you may hear in your head right now, the famous chorus says "Shots" 16x. The last time the Carolina Hurricanes has less shots on goal in a game than that song's chorus was October 23, 2014. Maybe it was because I was in the presence of Wayne Gretzky, who famously said, "You miss 100% of the shots...

Sports Story of the Week The Weekend of Comebacks Admittedly, when there is a weekend full of sports, I sometimes find myself searching for the "best" and "closest" game even when "my" teams are playing. This happened to me Saturday night. While watching my beloved Hokie Softball team, who was down by 5 runs with one inning left, I flipped over to check the status of the Hockey game (crossover seasons are hard in this...
