The Mindset Shift:

Most leadership cultures are addicted to the adrenaline of a big win. We often treat leadership like a sprint toward a summit, but in reality, there is no peak. The mountain just keeps going.

Your team doesn't need a superhero to appear and save the day during a crisis. They need a professional who is accessible, predictable, and present. High-level success isn't built on sporadic brilliance; it’s built on the willingness to do the work when it is boring, mundane, or difficult.

Sideline Story: LeBron's Record Breaking Game

On March 21, 2026, LeBron James stepped onto the court against the Orlando Magic and made history appearing in his 1,612th regular-season game.

At 41 years old and in his 23rd season, LeBron remains a dominant force. While his career is defined by individual accolades, his reflection on this milestone focused on something far simpler. In his post-game interview, he remarked:

“The best thing you can have for your teammates is availability and I’ve tried to be available throughout my career, two decades-plus, for my guys. It’s a byproduct of that.”

For one of the most decorated basketball players in history, the ultimate achievement was the fact that for over two decades, his colleagues never had to wonder if he was going to show up and do his job.

3 Actionable Takeaways:

1. Build Systems That Make Consistency Inevitable

Most businesses don't think about succession until a critical role is vacant. That's not a strategy. For every key position in your organization you should know who can fill it.

2. Master Emotional Predictability

Adopt a stance of "neutral curiosity" during crises to ensure your team spends their energy solving the problem rather than managing your mood.

3. Prioritize Durability Over Intensity

Many leaders burn bright and fade. The best of the best design how they work so they can last. Take time to regularly do an energy audit. Where are you overextending for short-term wins?

Sports Story of the Week You miss 100% of the shots you don't take In the famous LMFAO and Lil'Jon song, "Shots" which some of you may hear in your head right now, the famous chorus says "Shots" 16x. The last time the Carolina Hurricanes has less shots on goal in a game than that song's chorus was October 23, 2014. Maybe it was because I was in the presence of Wayne Gretzky, who famously said, "You miss 100% of the shots...

Sports Story of the Week The Weekend of Comebacks Admittedly, when there is a weekend full of sports, I sometimes find myself searching for the "best" and "closest" game even when "my" teams are playing. This happened to me Saturday night. While watching my beloved Hokie Softball team, who was down by 5 runs with one inning left, I flipped over to check the status of the Hockey game (crossover seasons are hard in this...
