The Mindset Shift:

We're obsessed with momentum. So, when a massive, noisy distraction forces us to pause, our instinct is to freeze or, worse, panic. When chaos hits, our instinct is to fight through. We need to stop viewing a pause, as failure. Sometimes resilience isn’t just about pushing through the noise. It’s about the discipline to stay focused while you wait.

Sideline Story: The Buzzer

Last Friday, the Detroit Pistons and Cleveland Cavaliers were at the 7:24 mark of the third quarter when a power surge turned the arena buzzer into an almost 20-minute, ear-splitting siren.

The scoreboard went dark. The clock froze. For nearly 20 minutes, coaches, players, and fans were stuck in a literal sound-chamber of chaos.

They couldn't play, heck- they couldn't focus, but they didn't retreat. They didn't hide. They probably wanted some earmuffs, but they tried to stay focused on what they could. They continued to warm up when they could. They stayed loose. They stayed focused on the game even when the IT guy was dropping F bombs on the sidelines and the tools of the game were broken. And when the noise finally ceased, they resumed the game using a back up plan. A manual airhorn and a dark scoreboard- quite unheard of in 2026.

Both teams kept their fire, their "momentum" and the Pistons ground out a 122-119 overtime win.

3 Actionable Takeaways:

1. Keep the blood flowing when stagnant.

If you hit a road block, continue with low-stakes, high-engagement tasks to keep your team’s energy from flatlining.

2. Strip the Scoreboard to the Essentials.

When your primary systems fail, bypass the complexity and focus your team on the essentials.

3. Control the Controllable's.

Ignore the distractions you can’t change and direct your team’s total energy towards what is in their immediate control.

The Mindset Shift: We all hear that leadership is a marathon, not a sprint so we are hard wired to emphasize endurance, consistency, and incremental progress.
